The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement, South East, Chioma Nweze on Wednesday applauded the National Assembly for approving the creation of an additional State in the region.

Nweze, said the bold decision to create additional state in the south east region is a historic step toward equity, justice, and national cohesion.

The Senior Special Assistant made this known in a statement signed and issued to newsmen in Abakaliki capital of Ebonyi State.

The statement reads in part: “I wish to sincerely commend the National Assembly’s Joint Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution for approving the creation of an additional state in the South-East geopolitical zone.

“For decades, the South-East has remained the only geopolitical zone with five states—Anambra, Imo, Ebonyi, Abia, and Enugu—while the other zones have six or seven.

“This long-standing imbalance has limited our region’s representation in national governance, resource allocation, and political participation.

“The approval reached during the Joint Committee’s two-day retreat in Lagos, held from October 24 to 25, 2025, reflects a strong commitment to fairness and inclusiveness.

“I deeply appreciate the leadership of the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, and the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, for their courage, open-mindedness, and sense of justice throughout this process.

“I also want to thank the governors, ministers, and public officials of Igbo extraction for their unwavering advocacy, unity, and outspokenness.

“Their collective voice and strategic engagement have played a major role in achieving this breakthrough.

“This is not a political victory—it is a constitutional correction. It reaffirms the belief that Nigeria can truly work for all its regions when equity guides our national decisions.

“As this process moves to the next phase, requiring two-thirds approval from both chambers of the National Assembly and from at least two-thirds of the State Houses of Assembly,

“I urge all stakeholders to stand firm and see it through. This is a moment for all Nigerians who believe in justice to support the South-East’s rightful inclusion.

“The creation of an additional state will not only correct a structural imbalance but also strengthen national unity, give our people a renewed sense of belonging, and ensure fairer representation in the Nigerian federation.

“I remain grateful to everyone, legislators, leaders, and citizens who have made this progress possible.
