It was an exchange of slap at Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital Abakaliki (AE-FUTHA), Ebonyi state on Tuesday February 4, between a medical doctor and a police officer serving with the state command who lost his daughter at the hospital.

The police officer whose name could not be ascertained at the time of filing this story, reportedly took his sick daughter to the hospital for treatment.

Information has It that a medical Doctor at AE-FUTHA had prescribed drugs for the officer’s daughter which was bought and injected on the girl. But another Doctor as gathered came in and prescribed another drug different from what his colleague had prescribed earlier.

He also questioned why the first Doctor prescribed the drugs for the baby.According to a close hospital source, the drugs prescribed by the second Doctor was later administered on the baby and the baby died some minutes after taking it.

It was scooped that after the injection, the baby started sweating uncontrollably which made the police officer to call the attention of the doctors but unfortunately the child died.“The policeman then confronted the first Doctor and held him on the neck over the death of his baby. One of the Doctors who was on duty came from behind and slapped the policeman and the policeman retaliated”, the source stated.

It took the intervention of the Chief Medical Director, Dr. Emeka Onwe Ogah, and officers from the police command to calm the situation.

Dr Ogah, in his response noted: “It is being handled, I’m just coming back from police station. The executive of Association of Resident Doctors and my own management team went to see the Commissioner of police.

“But one thing I have to say is that the man did not assault our Doctor because he was a police officer. He did it on his own because he was the one who brought the child to the hospital, because he is working with Ebonyi state police command, courtesy demands that we report him to his primary place of work. That is what is happening.

“We are happy that the CP is handling the matter well. We have had discussion with him and we have made our official complaint. He has immediately minuted it to the Deputy Commissioner of police in charge of intelligence to take up the matter and investigate let us see what has happened and the best way to handle it.

“I have appealed to the Resident Doctors to calm down, that management will see that justice is done. Our interest is to protect the lives of every person working here including our patients. any patient here is under our care”.
