The group made this known in a statement signed by its chairperson and secretary; Comrade Ogugua Egwu and Dr. O.H.N Chukwu and made available to journalists in Abakaliki, capital of Ebonyi state.

The statement reads in part: “The attention of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU AE-FUNAI
Branch, has been drawn to a news item which has gone viral concerning an academic staff of Alex Ekwueme Federal
University, Ndufu Alike Ikwo, Ebonyi State, Dr Felix Anyaegbunam over
allegations bordering on rape.

“ASUU AE-FUNAI Branch views as unfortunate, the media trial to which Dr.
Anyaegbunam has been subjected even before proper investigation has been
conducted on the matter.

“As a Union committed to the ideals of discipline and ethical conduct of its
members, ASUU urges the security agencies and the appropriate agencies of government to follow due process in dispassionately investigating the
allegations and ensuring a fair trial of the suspect having regard to his
presumption of innocence until otherwise established.

“ASUU AE-FUNAI Branch urges her members, stakeholders and the general public to remain calm while the due process of the law take its course” the group noted.
