Ebonyi state government has received test kits for the Coronavirus disease.

Governor David Umahi, disclosed this on Tuesday March 31, during a state broadcast on the activities of the state government to curb the dreaded coronavirus disease.

Umahi also revealed that the Molecular Laboratory facility at the Virology Centre Ebonyi State has commenced testing for the Coronavirus.

He said that eight suspected cases were tested at the Lab which all came out negative, while assuring that they would be discharged.

Recall that the Virology Center built by Governor Umahi’s administration was upgraded to a Covid-19 testing centre with the support of the federal government through the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

The upgrade made the Center the 7th Coronavirus Testing Centre in the country.
Stating that with the assistance of the Federal Government, reagents have been configured to fit into the screening machines owned by the State Government.

He restated the establishment of holding/observation centres in 6 locations across the state on equality of zones.

The governor pointed out that with the three treatment/isolation centres being put in place and the check points at the various borders of the state, the state is battle ready to prevent the spread of coronavirus in Ebonyi State.

He maintained that the directive on closure of all borders, entry and exit points of the state as well as ban on gatherings of religious worshipers, movement of vehicle and persons in and out of the State, drinking joints, burials, wedding ceremonies and other social events are still in force except those on essential services.

Umahi charged political office holders at all levels and security agencies to ensure full enforcement of the directives of Government on the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, Ebonyi state Commissioner for Health, Dr Daniel Umezuruike has stated their readiness to avert spread of the Coronavirus disease in the state.

Umezuruike on Friday in a telephone interview with The Voice, after our correspondent visited the Center, hinted that the Coronavirus Isolation Centre located at Unity Square Abakaliki was ready and has been put into use.

He said that they have already commenced the installation of equipments which includes two ventilators while water and electricity supplies are ready.

Asked how much it took the state to set up the isolation centre, the commissioner stated: It is an inter ministerial project, I cannot say exactly how much it cost. Like the generator, Ministry of Power provided it; the construction was handled by ministry of Housing, while in the equipping, ministry of Health is involved. So its not something I can tell you holistically the amount”.

He said that the rooms are suites and each room will contain two persons, adding that they have put in place about 15 rooms.

Meanwhile, our correspondent visited the centre and was pleased with what has been put on ground. The building was well structured in a way that it will give patients the needed comfort. Each room has a bedroom and palour, with a specious toilet and bedroom. There is also a laundry section as well as kitchen. And the fittings are of high quality.

This is a clear indication that the state government is not leaving anything to chance in the fight against coronavirus and is proactive when it comes to the health and wellbeing of Ebonyians.
