Six persons have died of the Corona Virus in Ebonyi state.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Daniel Umezuruike, disclosed this while briefing the Deputy Governor, Dr. Kelechi Igwe, who took over from Governor David Umahi, after he tested positive to the virus on Saturday.
The Deputy governor, held an interactive meeting with members of the state anti-coronavirus pandemic, at the old government house Abakaliki, on Tuesday, where he was briefed by the Commissioner for Health on their fight against the virus so far.
He said that 508 persons have been infected by the virus in Ebonyi state, while a total of 426 persons have been treated and discharged.
He said, “We have 508 confirmed cases and we have managed and discharged 406 patients. We categorized it according to the NCDC guideline but the total number managed and discharged is 426 out of 508 and we unfortunately lost six cases.
“Right from the beginning, his Excellency, the Governor put in a lot of measures to ensure that we don’t have any case but unfortunately, we had our index case on 26th April. Since then, we have been working tirelessly to ensure that we don’t have community transmission but it started happening and that is where we are now.
“Health workers will go house-to-house on daily basis and examine everybody and also do a kind of public sensitization on all the families they will visit and educate them on how to prevent the virus and also to know when somebody has been infected.”
In his address, Dr Igwe revealed that governor Umahi despite testing positive to the virus was yet to show any symptoms.
He said Umahi has directed the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Kenneth Ugbala, to tell all the MDAs in the state to commence daily, one hour prayer for all the people that have tested positive to the virus in the state and for the nation.
“We are all aware that a couple of days ago, the Chairman of the campaign against Covid-19 prevention and escalation in Ebonyi state, together with other aides of his got infected but up till this moment, he has not shown any sign of that infection and he is still very strong, he has been doing his official duties even in isolation which shows the level of passion he has for us and this state.
“Just yesterday, he directed the SSG to inform all the MDAs to commence with effect from today, one hour prayer for the state, for the nation, for our dear Governor and all the persons that have tested positive for coronavirus in Ebonyi state.
“For us at the state level, I want to say on behalf of the committee that the Commissioner for Health and the CMD FETHA and the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, must make sure that with effect from today, all our health workers must be tested. How can you go to give care to a man who is very sick when you are even more sick than him? Health workers in some places have tested positive to this coronavirus even in Ebonyi here. So, we must be sure that our health workers are safe before giving them the privilege to go and render care to those who are infected”, Igwe stated.
