‘Don’t Toe the Path of Simon Ekpa’ – Gov. Nwifuru Advises Scholarship Beneficiaries

The Governor of Ebonyi State, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, has advised beneficiaries of the state’s scholarship scheme to avoid following in the footsteps of Simon Ekpa, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Governor Nwifuru made this statement on Saturday while inaugurating the state’s scholarship program at the Chuba Okadigbo International Airport.

He stressed that Simon Ekpa, who was once a beneficiary of a similar scholarship program sponsored by the Ebonyi State Government, deviated from his educational purpose and has since been instigating crises across the South-East region.

The Ebonyi State Government recently awarded scholarships to over 200 indigenes to pursue studies in various fields. Speaking on the initiative, Governor Nwifuru disclosed that the government spent over ₦500 million to facilitate the safe transportation and proper arrangements for the beneficiaries.

The governor commended the CEO of Air Peace, Mr. Allen Onyema, for his significant support in providing affordable tickets for the students.

“I want you to know that what Allen Onyema did for us amounts to more than 60% of the total cost of the tickets. His contribution has been invaluable, and we remain deeply grateful,” Governor Nwifuru remarked.

The governor further stressed the financial commitment of the state to ensure the scholars’ comfort and success. “We have paid for your accommodation in London and provided a living allowance of £5,000 per beneficiary, which is roughly ₦916,000 per month. No one, not even I as governor, earns such a salary. My monthly salary is ₦513,000.” he added.

He further urged beneficiaries to remain focused on their studies and to uphold the aspirations of the people of Ebonyi State.

“Never forget where you come from. I would want you to allow the aspirations of our people inspire you, and let the challenges we face as a state fuel your determination to succeed. While there, do not forget we are counting on you to return to our state as leaders, innovators, and agents of change. This will justify the huge amount our state committed to ensuring you attain greater heights for the overall benefits of our people.

“Do not be swayed by the euphoria of luxury in overseas and looss in chase of dreams. Being guided by this, we can build together, the prosperous future our state deserves.

“Do not disappoint us. Remember Simon Ekpa, who was sent to Finland on scholarship but chose a path of incitement and violence. Don’t toe his path. If you do, it will be a regret for this state,” Governor Nwifuru stated emphatically.

“Once again, I would also like to use this medium to thank the dedicated team that made this scholarship scheme a reality. Your vision and determination have laid a solid foundation for a brighter tomorrow anchored on renewed minds which forms the core policy thrust of the People’s Charter of Needs Agenda.”

” Thank you, and may your journey be successful and rewarding as proud Ambassadors of Ebonyi State,” he stated.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mr. Victor Oluebube expressed gratitude to the governor for his fatherly love and assured the state government of their commitment to academic excellence.
