Commuters in Ebonyi State are lamenting the hike in fares which have gone up by 200 per cent across the state since the hike in fuel.
An investigation by THE VOICE revealed that most commuters now trek several kilometres to their places of work and residences since the hike in transport fare across the State.

Most of the commuters blame the incessant increase in fare on the increament of fuel price and the greed by the transporters who take advantage of the situation and inflict more hardship on the citizens. But the transport operators are arguing that there is no way the fare could be the same following fuel scarcity , increase in its price and increase in the sales of automobile.

The fare increase which cuts across all parts of the state started since last week Saturday , after meeting held by transpot users to increase the fare. Every drop Keke no matter the distance is 100 naira while some charge 150 depending on the distance. For instance a journey from Mile 50 to Udensi which used to cost N50 now cost 100.

A young man in his thirties, identified as Charles Kenneth who spoke to THE VOICE started that he spent the little he make daily on transport, he blamed the hike in transport fare on the government, while stating that the young ones should be giving a chance to rule the country, as they would be able to reposition the economy to the betterment of the people.

Stating “I don’t blame anyone, I blame the government, everything just keeps increasing and right now transport fare. What I do right now is that I embark on daily trek just to be able to see what to cater for myself and family” he noted.

Also, a young man from Afikpo south identified as Agatta Upkayi described the situation in the State as terrible. “The situation of things in the country and even in the State is pathetic. The increament of fuel has made Keke riders in the State to increase their fare.

” From Ruban to Kpirikpiri which is 50 naira before is now 100 naira. No matter where you are going they collect 100 naira from you and even more.

” I won’t blame the Keke riders much because of the increament in fuel, I blame the government which has put us in this condition. Everyone is now trekking , there is no money to pay the fare, the situation is bad and the government need to do something urgently. ” She stated .

Meanwhile Keke drivers, transporters complained that the price of transport fare was increased following the increment in fuel and also cost of purchasing an automobile be it Motorcycle or Tricycle.

Mr.Nwafor Thomas a Keke driver from Izzi stated ” the price of purchasing Keke is very high, before Keke was 700 hundred thousand naira, but now, it is now 1.5 million naira , and most of us are on hire purchase, it is very difficult to meet up with the demand of our boss , maintain the Keke and still meet up with our own needs.

“I believe if the price should reduce, the transport fare would also come back to how it was before.” He said.

He appealed to the government to help make the country a better place, as the price of goods and services are on the increase daily.
” I know is not easy for anyone, sometimes I carry some persons free out of pity , it is not easy for us either ” he decried.

Effort made to reach the chairman of Ebonyi State branch of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, proved abortive as his phone could not be reached.
