Better Health for Rural Women children and Internally Displaced, BERWO Foundation, the pet project of Mary-Maudline, wife of Ebonyi Governor, has entered into partnership with the state Ministry of Skill acquisition and job creation to train 130 youths on entrepreneurship skills.

Nwifuru who disclosed this during a ceremony to flag off the training, held on Saturday, June 22nd, at Pastoral Center, Mile 50, Abakaliki, stated that 130 beneficiaries were selected from the 13 Local Government Areas in Ebonyi State.

She said the training, with the theme; ‘A Pathway to Improving Quality of Life’, is geared towards empowering our youths with the knowledge and abilities to thrive in today’s dynamic world.

She counselled the beneficiaries to count themselves lucky to be among the project urging them to take the programme seriously as no knowledge is lost especially when it is a practical-oriented programme.

The First Lady noted that “In a rapidly evolving job market, the ability to acquire new skills is paramount, that is why my foundation Better Health for Rural Women, Children and Internally Displaced Persons (BERWO) has ensured that this training program is carefully crafted to provide participants with practical, hands-on training in a variety of skills that are in high demand.

“The training programme, schemed to last for 3 months will see the lucky beneficiaries engage in intensive skill acquisition training that includes computer training and graphics design, soap making, catering and shoe making, photography, fashion design and cosmetology among others. After the training, the 130 participants will be supplied with working tools, equipment and seed funds to start up their businesses.

She appreciated the state Ministry of Skill Development and Job Creation, BERWO team, other sponsors of the program for their foresight and commitment to youth development.

In his keynote address, the commissioner for skill development and job creation, Okwu Oko Udu . described the program as a deliberate commitment designed to equip and empower youth, women, and the internally displaced.

Udu admonished the beneficiaries to seize opportunities and thrive in various sectors and environment where innovation and entrepreneurship can flourish, and drive economic growth and social stability in Ebonyi state

According to Udu: “The training provided will open doors to new opportunities and foster a culture of self-reliance and resilience. By the end of Governor Nwifuru’s led administration in 8 years, over 50,000 Ebonyians should be out of the streets, they should be able to say, I can employ somebody. we are training them on fashion designing, barbing, catering, alumaco, and shoemaking. After the first 3 months, start up kits will be give which has been provided by the state government and BERWO.

instrumental in championing the cause of vulnerable individuals, enhancing education, and uplifting the livelihoods of many in our various communities.”Udu stated

In her goodwill message to the beneficiaries the commissioner for women affairs and social development, Felicia Nwankpuma, admonished the participants to put more zeal and passion into the programme. She noted that it is what the youths of today need to advance in life.

She noted that the programme came at the right time when the youths needed to be engaged positively, adding that it is a lifetime viable initiative that will benefit the participants and would also bring additional income to their homes.

Interacting with one of the beneficiaries, 28years old Agbo Joshua Chibuike, from Ishielu LGA. said “I finished school in 2015 and learnt how to make shoes but I didn’t have money to buy materials. I started doing Manson jobs, casting concrete until my Cordinator from my development center called me to tell I have been selected for this training.

I am very happy to be one of the beneficiaries today. Having a pre-knowledge of shoemaking, I will use this opportunity to upgrade and start-up with the funds given.”
