Gov’s wife inaugurates Ultra-Modern Eye Center At David Umahi Varsity in Ebonyi

The Ebonyi State First Lady, Mrs. Mary-Maudline Nwifuru, has commissioned an ultra-modern eye center at the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences (DUFUHS), Uburu, Ohaozara LGA of the state.

The governor’s wife who flagged off operations at the state-of-the-art facility, Wednesday, stated that her Foundation Better Health For Rural Women Children and Internally displaced persons, BERWO, collaborated with DUFHS to begin the life-changing initiative that will address eye challenges.

Mrs Nwifuru stated that BERWO through the centre would tackle eye challenges faced by individuals in rural communities by providing free screening, prescription glasses, medication, and even surgical interventions where necessary.

Earlier in his address, the Vice Chancellor of David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences Uburu, Professor Jesse Uneke, said the center will focus on tackling eye challenges, particularly cataracts and uncorrected refractive errors, which are leading causes of vision impairment.

Prof Uneke added that other conditions, such as age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy, will also be addressed in the centre.

According to him,” the ultra-modern health centre is a state-of-the-art centre of excellence eye research, training and patient Care”

“The Centre operates with a multi-disciplinary team of expert specializing in conducting research and training on eye related issues and caring of people with eye problems”

The center’s launch coincides with a free eye cleaning treatment program, which is part of Mrs. Nwifuru’s pet project, “Better Health for Rural Women, Children, and Displaced Persons” (BERWO). This initiative aims to reach out to those in need and demonstrate the government’s commitment to quality healthcare.

In a remark, the Pro-Chancellor of the University and former Minister of Communication and Digital Economy Dr Adebayo Shittu, emphasized that the institution would soon become a citadel of medical potentials.

Highpoints of the event was a tour around the facility, eye screening and cultural performances.
