By Chinwe Imo-Eze Onwosi

The wife of Ebonyi State Governor Chief, Mrs Mary-maudline Uzoamaka Nwifuru, has stated that her foundation, Better Health for Rural Women children and Internally Displaced, BERWO, will work with a comprehensive approach towards eradicating deadly practice of female genital mutilation in the state.

According to her, the comprehensive approach for eradicating FGM involved education, advocacy, and legislative measures.

Mrs Nwifuru stated this on Tuesday, in Abakaliki, during the commemoration of the 2024 International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM, with the theme “Her Voice, Her Future’’, organised by Better Health for Rural Women, Children, and the Internally Displaced (BERWO), in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA.

The Gov’s wife who was represented by the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Felicia Nwankpuma, called on religious leaders, civil society organisations, women groups, and other relevant bodies to show commitment in the fight against female genital mutilation and cutting.

Her words: “Female genital mutilation comprises all procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons.

“This practice has been proven to have no benefit for girls and women, causing lifelong problems for those who survive.

“Today, we stand united in our refusal to tolerate this violation of the rights and dignity of women and girls in Ebonyi State.

“FGM inflicts both immediate and long-term physical and psychological harm. It robs girls of their right to health, well-being, and bodily integrity. It perpetuates gender inequality and contributes to a cycle of discrimination and violence against women.

“My foundation, Better Health for Rural Women, Children, and Internally Displaced Persons (BERWO), is ready to eliminate FGM.

We must work hand in hand with communities where the practice persists and foster an environment where the rights and well-being of girls are prioritised.

“While awareness and community engagement are vital, legal and policy measures play a significant role. The Government of Ebonyi State, the Nigerian First Lady’s forum with UNICEF, is working collaboratively to enact and enforce laws that criminalise FGM, ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable.

“On this day, we also extend our support to survivors of FGM. These individuals have faced unimaginable challenges, yet their resilience is a testament to the human spirit.

“The BERWO Foundation provides support services, including healthcare, counselling, and legal assistance. We are readily available to those who have undergone or are at risk of Fgm. She stated.

Ebonyi state chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Stanley Okoro Emegha, Sunday, debunked media reports that the serving council chairmen in in the state will not be allowed to go for second term.

Emegha in a signed statement made available to THE VOICE expressed shock on the publication on social media credited to him titled ” No 2nd term for council chairman”.

He rather explained that during Ebonyi South stakeholders meeting weekend that he noted that any stakeholder who did not win convincingly come February 3rd Bye-election may lose his chances of retaining his position.

The statement reads, “I received with absolute shock and consternation the publication in some sections of the social media which maliciously and intentionally cast aspersion and defamation on my personality and the office of the chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ebonyi State which I occupy.

“The irritable falsehood and ill-fated report which says “No 2nd Term For Council Chairmen in Ebonyi–APC Boss, Emegha” is most despicable because such never transpired during the Ebonyi South stakeholders’ meeting at the Centenary City residence of the Honorable Minister of Works, His Excellency Sen. Chief David Umahi as quoted.

“While addressing party members during the engagement which took place on Friday, 26th January, 2024, I stated categorically clear that any chairman who did not win convincingly the Ebonyi South Senatorial District bye-election on Saturday the 3rd day of February with about 85 to 95% of the ballot cast will not be given ticket to participate in the forthcoming local government area poll.

“Similarly, the same charge was extended to other government functionaries so that the party could secure the people’s mandate and cruise to victory at the end of the day. Actually, they were all persuaded to do the needful but with a clause to comply strictly with the rules guiding the game.

“For more emphasis, I never mentioned the council chairmen of the thirteen local government areas in the state as being purported by the disgruntled and unscrupulous elements hiding under the cloak of journalism to display their ignorance and hatred for good governance.

“Most people who drew my attention to the hostile and venomous publication were astonished because they know I do not talk recklessly.

“Therefore, I wish to sternly advise the originator of that delusion called media publication and other accomplices to desist and never attempt to toe that line of action capable of disrupting the peaceful atmosphere, His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Ebonyi State, Right Honourable (Dr) Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru has given to the people.

“On this note, I want the people of Ebonyi State as a matter of good conscience and public good to totally disregard the falsehood purveyed by individuals who allowed themselves to be used by enemies of the state

Supreme Court: Gov Nwifuru didn’t condemn PDP, APGA opponents— Commissioner, Okpor

By Chinwe Imo-Eze Onwosi

Ebonyi State government, has described as false  ill-intended and myopic, media report alleging that Governor Nwifuru vowed not to accommodate opponents during the 2023 election, Ifeanyichukwuma Odii of PDP and Prof Bernard Odoh of APGA for dragging him to court

The state government refuted the report in a statement signed by the Commissioner for information and State orientation Mr. Jude Okpor on Saturday and made available to Journalists.

According to Okpor, Governor Nwifuru was misquoted by the media report.

Recall that Governor Francis Nwifuru on Friday penultimate week defeated the PDP and APGA governorship candidates, Ifeanyichukwuma Odii and Prof. Bernard Odoh was declared winner of the 2023 general election by the supreme Court.

Okpor said; “The Government of Ebonyi State has noted with utter dismay reactions in some quarters emanating from some distorted reports from some sections of the media over His Excellency, Rt Hon Bldr Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru’s statement while addressing stakeholders on 14th January, 2024 concerning his ultimate electoral victory at the supreme Court of Nigeria.

“It is quite unfortunate that the well-intended and articulate address of the Governor was mischievously lifted in part and quoted out of context by such media representatives in the state for some clandestine reasons, best known to them.

“The report published in some media outlets which had it that the Governor avowed his determination not to forgive, accommodate or work with his election challengers in court: Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii of the PDP and Bernard Ifeanyichukwu Odoh of APGA, and their supporters, is to say the least, false, myopic and ill-intended.

“For the purpose of straightening the records, the Governor on that day, in his usual forthrightness and plainness of heart, simply narrated the tortuous and unpleasant experiences he had in the course of following the avoidable litigations from the tribunal, through the Appeal to the Supreme Court where it was finally nailed in his favour.

“The Governor being a man of integrity whose words are bankable simply expected his opponents to respect their words as well by ceasing further litigations as promised after meetings with them.

“That not being the case, the Governor at the meeting merely expressed his dissatisfaction with the fact that one of them reneged on his words by serving him a suit notice a day after their meeting, an action the Governor considers contradictory to his eternalised values of integrity and reliability. He regretted the unwarranted prolonged litigations brought to the government and people of the state, and wished it never happened so.

“Governor Nwifuru in his statement, did not in anyway condemn his opponents for seeking redress according to their conscience in courts of competent jurisdiction. Recall that the Governor, being a professing and practical democrat, after winning at the polls, immediately reached out to his opponents with the olive branch which was unfortunately rebuffed.

“The Governor, not relenting, for the good and unity of the state, still approached them individually to sheath their swords but they were still recalcitrant. Their going to court, though a huge miscalculation on their part, was considered by the Governor as the best approach which has eventually brought to rest all the divergent interests, paving the way for a possible corporate action by all and sundry towards the development and continued oneness of the state.

“Governor Nwifuru, in his statement during the meeting, merely expressed ordinary human sentiment that going by the level of deceit and seemingly irreconcilable stance of the PDP and the APGA candidates prior to the supreme court ruling, it would ordinarily have become very difficult to freely work with them. However, since the interest of the state is paramount to any individual’s interest, such a feeling could not be allowed to fertilise.

“The Governor’s camaraderie spirit and positive disposition in embracing all Ebonyians, including his opponents in the election was summarily emphasized by his last statement at the meeting: “So, sincerely, I tender an apology on their behalf, for us as a state to forgive them. We should forgive them for they knew not what they were doing, and I am sure we are going to forgive them in Jesus’ name,” Okpor stated

Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has reiterated that his administration will priortize on ‘The People’s Charter of Needs’, targeted at delivering more dividends of democracy to the electorates.

The governor, who was reacting to the judgment of the Supreme Court which upheld his election, said equity, justice, and fairness have prevailed.

He said: “Today is a historic day in our dear State. It is a day when light overtook darkness, it is a day we are victorious over the Supreme Court Judgement that finally upheld the populist mandate freely given to us by you.

“The judgment which was delivered by the erudite judges has finally nailed the protracted legal battle challenging the sincerity of purpose, courage of conviction, equity, fairness, and justice —the fulcrum that our coming to power hinged.

“It is a win for all of us who vehemently opposed the mercantilist politics that nearly serrated our shared vision as a people. And so, I congratulate you.

“The People’s Charter of Needs which integrates the urgent needs of our people would have been truncated if not for your fervency in supplications to God Almighty for the judiciary to defend democratic ethos.”

The Governor said the judgment calls for not only jubilation but celebration because it has brought an attempt to truncate the wishes of the people.

He said: “As we have survived their legal onslaughts, we are now more than conquerors, with a renewed verve to deliver the mandate you freely gave.”

“We are convinced that never again shall division against our shared norms and common ancestry rear its ugly head.”

He commended the nation’s judiciary for its sincerity and unbiased stance in the dispensation of justice and also the All Progressive Congress, and his campaign council the Divine Mandate Campaign Organization, for galvanizing support that led to his victory at the polls.

Governor Nwifuru however assured that he will remain magnanimous in his resolve to carry everybody along irrespective of Party affiliations and enjoined his opponents to join hands with him in his administration’s drive to build a more virile state
