Members of the Federal House of Representatives Committee on Health Institutions have recently visited the Alex Ekweme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, on an oversight visit as part of their annual health exercise.

The Committee Team leader and Member representing Igbo-Etiti/Uzo-Uwani Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon Dr Martins Okeh Said that the committee is in charge of about 73 agencies and has visited as part of its yearly ritual and had interactions with the CMD and the Management Team of the hospital expressed satisfaction and commended the CMD for the development at AE-FUTHA I and II.

He said, “We have had interaction with the CMD and the Management Team of the hospital and we are particularly impressed with what we’ve seen here in Abakaliki, both at the other angle of the Teaching Hospital and here and we commended the CMD for what he has done and I told him but there are still areas of improvement and he has to interact with the members of the House Committee for us to have strong improvement; but he is one of the bests in the hospitals that we have visited”.

Rt. Hon. Dr Martins said that they had visited some other hospitals in the south east zone; saying, “We took Anambra state, Nnamdi Azikwe University Teaching Hospital, Imo state, Federal Medical centre Oweeri, Abia state, Federal medical centre Umuhia, Enugu state, all the federal medical centre Enugu and Ebonyi state Alex Ekueme Teaching Hospital Abakaliki”.

He lamented over the country’s economic slack down caused by COVID-19. According to him, “2020 has been a very rough year because of the COVID-19 and what happened in the oil economic; of oil dropped drastically.

In his remark, the Chief Medical Director of the institution, Dr Onwe Ogah Emeka thanked the team while narrating some of the challenges the hospital is facing ranging from electricity, financial obstacles as the budget allocated is performing poorly as they need to pay debts and build more wards to accommodate the influx of patients.

According to Onwe Ogah; “Because of the poor performance of the budget, the equipments procured by the hospital, we have not been able to pay and I believe this Honourable members will help us in solving this problem so that this contractors and suppliers should not wake up and take us to court because we breach the side of the deal”.

“We also have challenge of wards to admit patients, our emergency is always congested to the brim because this is the only teaching hospital and also is serving as a secondary care level giver that gives us a very big worry in the hospital which we are trying over come. So space is our big challenge in the hospital”.

“We also have challenge of electricity, now hospitals gives essential services but we been charged as industries because of that we have huge place amount of money commitment every month which are have not been to meet up with every month.”

Dr Ogah, however called on the Federal Government to do something to assist change the story for better.
