…Calls on IGP, Presidency to open up

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ebonyi State chapter, has described as unwarranted and an attack on the Igbo nation, the recent invasion of Governor Umahi’s Abuja residence by the police.

This was revealed in a 7 point communiqué issued by the Union at the end of her Congress on September 9, 2019 at Dr. Sam Egwu Press Center Abakaliki.

The Union noted that with the invasion allegedly linked to the ban on the movement of herders with arms in the South-East region by Southeast Governors’ Forum, which His Excellency is the Chairman that the region is no longer safe to speak up on matters affecting them negatively.

It expressed worry over the continued silence of the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, and the Presidency on the invasion and called on them to come open and make public pronouncements on the outcome of their investigation if any.

The Union also congratulated Gov. Umahi on his recent victory at the tribunal, describing it as deserving and has reaffirmed him as the winner of the March 9, governorship election in the state.

It also commended the governor for securing approval of the Federal Government to build an International Airport in the State.

“The Council wishes to congratulate His Excellency, the Governor of Ebonyi State, Engr. Chief David Nweze Umahi, FNSE, FNATE, on his recent deserved victory at the governorship election tribunal judgment held in Abakaliki, which reaffirmed him as the winner of the March 9, Governorship Election in the state.

“The Council further expresses satisfaction that the Governor has performed creditably well in office and urges him to sustain the landmark achievements he has recorded so far.

“We condemn in strong terms, the invasion of Governor Umahi’s Abuja home, allegedly linked to the ban on the movement of herders with arms in the South-East region by Southeast Governors’ Forum, which His Excellency is the Chairman. It is an unwarranted attack not just on Governor Umahi and the South-East Governors, but against the entire Ndigbo.

“We also express concern over the continued silence of the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, and the Presidency on the invasion and calls on them to come open and make public pronouncements on the outcome of their investigation if any.

“The Council equally applauds Governor David Umahi, for successfully securing approval of the Federal Government to build an International Airport in the State, describing it as a great feat that will bring so much fame to the state when accomplished,” the communiqué stated.

However, the Tony Nwizi led exco assured members of the Union of their resolve to continue to run an inclusive government to the benefit of all.

Stating that the members of the credentials screening Committee, also has its total support and encouragement to ensure they successfully carry-out the assignment.

At the Congress, a committee was inaugurated to plan the NUJ Press Week in the state, billed to hold first week of December 2019.
