Says disease still active in 6LGAs

The Commissioner for Health Ebonyi State, Dr Daniel Umezurike has confirmed that 23 persons have been infected by Lassa Fever virus in Ebonyi State following the recent outbreak.

Umezurike said that the state recorded only one death, adding that the disease is currently active in six out of the 13 local government areas in the state.

He revealed the six local governments to be Abakaliki, Izzi, Ebonyi, Ohaukwu, Ohaozara and Ikwo.

The Commissioner stated this on Tuesday in Abakaliki while briefing journalists at the state Ministry of Health.

He further disclosed that the ministry has activated an emergency operations centre to coordinate the state’s response in collaboration with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), partners and relevant stakeholders in the health sector.

Umezurike described Lassa fever as a viral hemorrhagic illness, transmitted to humans through contact with food or household items contaminated by infected rodents.
