A German based Ebonyian, identified as Kelechi Nwigbo, from Akahufu Ekpaomaka, in Ikwo local government area of the state has been struck dead by lightning.

The deceased was struck dead in his hotel room upon his return to Ebonyi state.

The incident happened over the weekend at Mark Doris Hotel in Eke Market Afikpo, Afipko North Local Government Area of the state.

Nwigbo, as learnt had checked into the hotel instructing that nobody should disturb him, but after four days, the hotel management started perceiving an offensive odour from his room and immediately alerted police in Afikpo.

When police officers broke into the room, the man was allegedly seen carrying what looks like a calabash with some money inside and with white cloth material on his head and waist.

Workers in the hotel confessed they had heard the lightening, accompanied with thunder from deceased window, but because he had instructed that nobody should come to his room unless he called the hotel’s attention, they did not borther going to check on him.

It was learnt that the last time he returned to Nigeria was in 2017 and that the family was not aware of his presence in the country let alone being in Afikpo after 13 years.
When contacted, the police public relations officer in Ebonyi State DSP, Odah Loveth, confirmed the report. She said police were working tirelessly to unravel the course of the man’s death.

“When the police divisional crime officer, Afikpo division led his team to the hotel on the 24th, broke into the room, the man was already decomposing.

“His international passport was recovered in the room and the body evacuated to the mortuary, ” Odah stated

She appealed to the people of Afikpo , Ikwo and his family members that any person with useful information about the death should contact the police, assuring that their identity will be protected.
