…I was drunk and I raped her only once- suspect
Police have paraded the 20-year-old Fulani Herdsman, identified as Laulo Isa, who raped 54 yr-old woman to death in Ebonyi.
The deceased was identified as Mary Okereke.
Briefing journalists on the ugly development, the state Commissioner of Police, CP Awosola Awotinde confirmed that the suspect confessed to the crime, adding that the woman died while struggling with the herdsman.
He said the incident happened on Saturday, December 28, at about 8pm at Ufuezeraku village in Ugwulangwu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of the state.
“The incident happened at Ugwulangwu in Ohaozara local government area. The Fulani herdsman met the woman on the road and grabbed her and there was struggle between the two of them but the herdsman overpowered the woman. During the struggle the woman lost her life”, CP stated
He said the suspect ran away after committing the crime, but left his cap and slippers at the scene of the incident, adding that it was through the things he left behind that he was traced to and was arrested.
Awotinde noted that the corpse was deposited at the Okposi General Hospital Mortuary in the Ohaozara Council.
“Isa Laulo has been arrested by the police after a combine team of policemen led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of the area cordoned off the community with the help of youths of the area around 4.30am and apprehended the suspect.
“Information was received from stakeholders in the community that lifeless body of a woman, one Mrs. Okereke aged 54 was lying along a bush path. The information revealed further that one Ikechukwu Peter, a passerby sighted her struggling with a Fulani herder around 7pm.
“The DPO led a team to the area and the picture was taken. The corpse was removed and taken to General Hospital, Okposi Mortuary.”
“On 29th of December, 2019, the same combine team stormed the area around 4:30pm and cordoned off the place and together with the youths of Ugwulangwu, searched the area and arrested the principal suspect, one Isa Laulo 20 year old Fulani herdsman confessed to the crime and he was taken into custody. He confessed that he raped the woman”, he added.
Meanwhile, the suspect who spoke to newsmen at the police headquarters, Abakaliki, claimed he was drunk and didn’t know what happened.
“I didn’t even know whether it was a man or woman that I grabbed. The woman struggled with me, I didn’t beat her or hit her with anything.
When I grabbed her she fell on the ground and I fell on top of her.
“I had sex with her just once, but I didn’t know she was dead. I was drunk and didn’t know what I was doing”, he claimed
