The governor of Ebonyi state, Engr. David Umahi on Monday 2nd November, 2020 has ordered for the reduction of Ebonyi State University (EBSU) tuition fees.

This was announced through the office of the secretary to the state government, Kenneth Ugbala.

The reduction was done to cushion the negative impact of Covid-19 on the citizens, because the pandemic has dealt a big blow on our economy and it has left the citizens with almost nothing to bank on.

The governor through his magnanimity ordered that school fees should be reduced by 10% for non indigenes and 20% for the indigenes to help the students’ parents/guardians meet up with the fee.

Speaking with the Student Union government, President Samson Abani, told The Voice that he is excited following the governor’s concern about the welfare of the students.

According to him, they cried out to the governor for reduction of school fees three months ago following the impact of Covid-19 pandemic which kept the students out of school for almost six months.

The President told The Voice therefore that the reduction will take effect from 2020/2021 academic session which is as from next year. He said that the announcement was made through the secretary to the state government Kenneth ugbala which reads thus.

“I am directed by His Excellency, Chief David Nweze Umahi Governor of Ebonyi State to state as follows:

“That Ebonyi State Government is aware of the effects of COVID-19 pandemic on the world economies of which Ebonyi State is highly affected.”

“We know that the finances of our people are highly affected which will in effect, affect the education of our children.”

“To lessen the burdens on our parents especially in catering for the students of Ebonyi State University and encourage more of our students to go to university, the Governor has reduced the school fees of Ebonyi State University from year 1 to year 5, this takes effect from 2020/2021 academic session”
“All non indigenes of Ebonyi State University School fees reduced by N10,000 per student, all indigenes of Ebonyi State in Ebonyi State University school fees reduced by N20, 000 per student.”

“This amount will be aggregated and paid directly to Ebonyi State University management sometime in 2021”

“Note that last week, Ebonyi State Government released all monthly subventions owed to Ebonyi State University and additional N200million Salary intervention fund totalling N500m to assist in EBSU staff salary payment.”

“This sacrifice will be affecting some other government programmes like infrastructure development and provision of medical services in the state as they have become opportunity cost.”

“We request our young ones to start the process of registering themselves 200 per LGA to benefit from the #ENDSARS Empowerment fund which will be launched in November 2020”
